Abstract

Iron black commonly employs in thermal insulation riser sleeves due to its ability to react with aluminum powder, generating heat. However, the complex production process and unstable composition of iron black lead to high production costs. The potential of using arc furnace flue ash (AFFA) as a complete substitute for iron black and MnO2 and KNO3 oxidizing agents in conventional riser sleeves was investigated in this study. Waste material can be transformed into a valuable resource, while production costs can be reduced by utilizing arc furnace flue ash. The research examined the impact of varying types and amounts of arc furnace flue ash on riser sleeve temperature and holding time by conducting single-factor and orthogonal optimization experiments. The orthogonal optimization experiment determined that the optimum ratio of each oxidant was 6 % arc flue ash, 3 % MnO2 and 6 % KNO3. At this time, the highest temperature was 1512 ℃ and the holding time was 244 s. Results indicated that different types of arc furnace flue ash used as an oxidizing agent demonstrated superior holding capacity and heat generation performance compared to iron black. Additionally, a comparative analysis of factory casting experiments using ductile iron 600-3 (IS) revealed that both arc furnace flue ash and iron black risers effectively countered shrinkage. However, arc furnace flue ash risers exhibited improved mechanical properties, as evidenced by the hardness of the castings.

Abstract

Eggs and samples of the fat (blubber), muscles, and liver from three species of penguins: Pygoscelis adeliae, P. antarctica and P. papua were collected on King George Island in 1978. DDT residues were determined in the samples with the gas chromatography method. In the tissues pp'DDE and traces of pp'DDT were found, in the eggs merely pp'DDE. The highest DDT content (wet weight) was recorded in the fat of penguins, the lowest in the eggs. The differences between species in the mean values of the content of DDT residues in the tissues and eggs are not statistically significant. An increase in the level of pp'DDE concentration in the tissues and eggs of penguins was observed, as compared with earlier studies of other authors, as well as a tendency toward dippearance of the active form, i.e. pp'DDT, in the samples.

Abstract

Groundwater quality depends on many factors, among which public water supply systems and wastewater infrastructure in built-up areas plays a very important role. Analyses of influence of designed water supply and sewage network in Maciejowa village on the ground- and surface water quality have been the main aim of the paper. A mathematical model based on deterministic description of groundwater flow and migration of pollutants has been applied. An influence of various scenarios of drinking water/wastewater system development and management on pollution loads entering water environment were simulated. Recommendations regarding the sequence of individual piping systems construction were formulated to assure the best protection of water resources.

Abstract

Wojciech Biberstein-Kazimirski is a fascinating, non-typical scientist, who has nevertheless been forgotten by Polish historiography. Count Tytus Działyński immediately saw great potential in him and generously funded his studies. The trust of the Działyński family was passed on from father to son and Jan Działyński also supported the work of Kazimirski, who was certainly the greatest Polish orientalist. Kazimirski was an active patriot of the Polish insurrection. He took refuge in France where he made a respectable career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the 19th century. He was awarded French citizenship and made an officer of la Légion d’honneur. He distinguished himself as a remarkable linguist and published works in a dozen languages, including the most famous French translation of the Qu’ran of all time and his French-Arabic dictionary, which are still considered among the best today. He was also an expert in oriental manuscripts. He was appreciated by the two Czartoryski princes, and the two Shahs of Iran of his time. Aft er his death, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs erected a beautiful bust on his tomb that can still be admired. However, despite all this, there is not a single accurate biography about him. On the contrary, most notices and articles do not even get the most basic things right about him, such as his name, his origin, or his religion.
