Abstract

Sleep apnea syndrome is a common sleep disorder. Detection of apnea and differentiation of its type: obstructive (OSA), central (CSA) or mixed is important in the context of treatment methods, however, it typically requires a great deal of technical and human resources. The aim of this research was to propose a quasi-optimal procedure for processing single-channel electroencephalograms (EEG) from overnight recordings, maximizing the accuracy of automatic apnea or hypopnea detection, as well as distinguishing between the OSA and CSA types. The proposed methodology consisted in processing the EEG signals divided into epochs, with the selection of the best methods at the stages of preprocessing, extraction and selection of features, and classification. Normal breathing was unmistakably distinguished from apnea by the k-nearest neighbors (kNN) and an artificial neural network (ANN), and with 99.98% accuracy by the support vector machine (SVM). The average accuracy of multinomial classification was: 82.29%, 83.26%, and 82.25% for the kNN, SVM and ANN, respectively. The sensitivity and precision of OSA and CSA detection ranged from 55 to 66%, and the misclassification cases concerned only the apnea type.

Abstract

Over the past decades, using of sustainable materials in construction is a challenging issue, thus Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) took the attention of civil and structural engineers for its lightweight and high-strength properties. The paper describes the results of the shear strength testing of three different types of bars: (i) basalt- FRP (BFRP), (ii) hybrid FRP with carbon and basalt fibres (HFRP) and (iii) nano-hybrid FRP (nHFRP), with modification of the epoxy matrix of the bar. The hybridization of carbon and basalt fibres lead to more costefficient alternative than Carbon FRP (CFRP) bars and more sustainable alternative than Basalt FRP (BFRP) bars. The BFRP, HFRP and nHFRP bars with different diameters ranging from Ø4 to Ø18 mm were subjected to shear strength testing in order to investigate mechanical properties and the destruction mechanism of the bars. Obtained results display a slight downward trend as the bar diameter increase, which is the most noticeable for HFRP bars. In most of the cases, BFRP bars were characterized by greater shear deformation and less shear strength compared to HFRP and nHFRP bars. Performed testing may contribute to comprehensive understanding of the mechanical behavior of those types of FRP bars.

Abstract

The author of the article analyses this phenomenon on the example of literature based discussions among researcher provided by V. Lepahin and M. Maslova. The main subject of discussion is a poem of Nikolay Gumilyov’s Andrei Rublev. In this particular case this had led to the fact that researchers were unable to see obvious connection with the Song of Solomon in the poem by Nikolai Gumilev and came to the false conclusion of incompetence Nikolai Gumilev in biblical matters. The article helps to understand some of the trends that are popular in modern Russian literary study.
