At school we are taught that matter exists in three states: gas, liquid, and solid. Meanwhile even a cursory glance at the world around us suggests that things are not really all that simple, that there must be some intermediate state between a liquid and a solid.

W szkole uczymy się o trzech stanach skupienia: gazowym, ciekłym i stałym. Tymczasem nawet pobieżna obserwacja przekonuje, że nic nie jest tak proste, jak się wydaje (a dotyczy to chyba nie tylko kwestii naukowych) i istnieje coś pomiędzy cieczą a kryształem. ,,Ciekłe kryształy" już z nazwy sytuują się właśnie ,,pomiędzy".
