Abstract

This paper discusses the linguistic features of political propaganda in the Polish newspaper “Trybuna Radziecka”, which was published in Moscow in 1927–1938 and edited by Polish left-intelligentsia, living in USRR as political émigrés in the interwar period. “Trybuna Radziecka” as the other Polish newspapers published in Soviet Russia was a part of the Soviet press. It entirely depended on Soviet authorities. Its language reflected the Soviet Russian language and was an example of political jargon typical for all communist newspapers of the interwar period.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of defining the concept “ideologeme,” one meaningful for political linguistics. The paper attempts to define the concept of an ideologeme and also present a classification of ideologemes. In this paper the following types of ideologemes are discussed: ideologemes proper and ideologemic words. The types of ideologemes are accompanied with examples from “Trybuna Radziecka” – the main Polish newspaper published in Moscow from 1927 to 1938 and edited by Polish communists, living as political émigrés in post‑revolution Soviet Russia.

Abstract

This article explores the beginnings of Polish press studies. The boundaries of the early history of the discipline are fixed by reference to some important events; the period itself is divided into two phases. The first, dominated by mere description, was followed by a second phase characterized by the appearance of aggregate data and more theory-oriented approach. The aim of the article is to recount the research in this field, and to refine and verify some of its elements

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the ephemera related to Sandomierz — either by content or place of the publication — whose distinctive trait was the use of the word 'jednodniówka', or single issue, in the title, the subtitle or the contents. Chronologically, this survey ranges from 1918, the date of the first print of this kind to be published, to the last one (known to the au-thors) dated 2002 and does not cover publications in languages other than Polish. The source material gathered in accordance with these criteria comprises a total of 34 single issues, of which ten appeared in the pre-war period and twenty-four after World War II. Themati-cally, ten of them can be classified as political or concerned with social issues; eight are products of trade unions or other professional associations; twelve are aimed at the younger generation; and each of the remaining four has a focus of its own (i.e. military, historical, religious, literary-artistic). In this article all of the single issues are discussed both with regard to their in format (layout) and their content.

Abstract

When discussing the perception of international events in the Polish pre-war press, it should be noted that these were frequently the subject matter in times of loss of independence such as partitioning of Poland and subsequent world wars. Some of the events happening in the history of the United States were of interest to local and national press. It applied even to one of the most violent and racist of American organizations — the infamous Ku Klux Klan. The purpose of this article is to acquaint readers with the image of the most powerful Klan of 1920’s in the Polish press. It is intriguing that the subject of Klan remains relatively unknown to Polish scientific literature. As of April 2020 there have been published only four monographies about the Invisible Empire written by Polish authors. This is puzzling because, as stated above, the subject matter of the Klan already existed in the Polish press at the time of its greatest power. Moreover, Polish-language readers during the partitions of Poland could familiarize themselves with current social and ethnic issues in the United States*. One example would be a series of articles in Galician press on the William Cody’s Wild West Show which toured Polish lands in 1906**.

Abstract

This article deals with the ephemeral magazine Strumień [ The Stream], which represents an all but forgotten chapters in the history of Warsaw modernism. Launched by Wacław Gąsiorowski in 1900, this artistic and literary periodical was inspired by the success of the illustrated weekly Życie [ Life], published since 1897 in Cracow. Aimed primarily at a small elite readership, Strumień was plagued from its inception by financial difficulties. As a result, it had to close down after a few months and made its mark primarily as a target of jokes in Warsaw satirical press.

Abstract

Galicia’s autonomous status was in fact a doubletrack affair. On the one hand Galicia became a shining example of freedom and autonomy, embedded in the new constitutional order of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, while on the other hand it was tied down to a monarchical absolutism which offered only limited protection of individual rights. The press in particular was caught in the dilemmas produced by this situation, especially in the sensitive areas of political loyalty and religion.

Abstract

From its inception in 1958, the tourist and educational magazine “Poznaj Swój Kraj” [Discover Your Country] was never free from propaganda. Materials of this kind were usually included to mark congresses of the ruling Polish United Workers’ Party or national and state holidays. The official propaganda of success reached its climax in the 1970s. After 1981 eulogies of the socialism system receded and the focus of attention turned to tensions between industrial development and conservation.

Abstract

This article presents an outline history of the Polish political press addressed to the younger generation of readers in the years 1899–1918. It contains a summary account of its origins, socio-political contexts, geographical distribution as well as its typological differentiation. The data show that at the beginning of the 20th century that market was dominated by two contenders, the nationalists and the socialists, while titles espousing other ideological and party-political options (the agrarian, the Christian Democrat, or the conservative) were trailing far behind.

Abstract

This article examines the editorial work of Ignacy Szydłowski, who was in charge of Wizerunki i Roztrząsania Naukowe [ Scholarly Profiles and Research], a highbrow literary and historical magazine published between 1834 and 1843 by Zawadzki Brothers, Wilno's leading publisher and bookseller company. The periodical holds an important place in the history of Polish Lithuanian learned journals in the 19th century and provides the focus of the final phase of Ignacy Szydłowski's intellectual biography. The article detects a notable parallel between the evolution of Szydłowski's aesthetic views and changes in the character of the magazine he edited.

Abstract

This artical is a survey of hitherto unresearched Prątka Jednodniówka [ The Mayfly], a magazine edited by the patients of the TB sanatorium at Bystra Śląska near Bielsko-Biała and published in 1931–1935. Five issues of the magazine stored at the Cieszyn Library were examined for their literary content, made up almost exclusively by humor and satire. The gelotherapeutic profile makes the magazine unique among similar publications associated with healthcare institutions.

Abstract

This article discusses the anti-Czech plebiscite propa-ganda in the press of Cieszyn Silesia (Těšínské Slezsko), focusing on the successive issues of the Republika, a local Polish-language weekly, published between January and May 1920. The analysis shows that Republika's radical language and multiple articles aimed at discrediting Czechoslovakia and the Czech nation turned it into a potent instruments of pro-Polish agitation on the eve of the plebiscite (which was eventually cancelled).

Abstract

The article analyzes some selected themes that may have been of interest to the Polish expatriates in Brazil, judging by the content of the Gazeta Polska w Brazylii [ The Polish Newspaper in Brazil] after it resumed publication in July 1893 until the end of the year. The analysis reveals that the range of topics which the editors thought attractive to their readers was fairly broad. It included, apart from Brazilian and Polish affairs, information about developments in Germany, Russia, Austro-Hungary, France and Italy.

Abstract

The article outlines the history of Polish automotive magazines and, additionally, the results of the author’s latest research. The accumulation of hitherto unknown facts and new findings have made it necessary to revise the received view of the subject. So, for instance, the first Polish automotive magazine to be published was Gazeta Automobilowa. It was launched in Lwów in February 1911, five months earlier than Lotnik i Automobilista, until recently believed to be the first Polish car magazine. The article contains an updated, most comprehensive list of Polish automotive periodicals that appeared in print until 1939.

The profile covers key aspects of the magazine's printing process, sales and marketing as well as an analysis of its content in comparison with other periodicals of this kind. An estimated fifty titles were launched in Poland in the radio guide market segment after the first issue of Przegląd Radiotechniczny went to print in 1923. While providing information about radio programmes and technology, they led the way in the transition to a new age of public communication.
