Abstract

This article outlines the rise and development of popular science periodicals in Poland from the 18th century until 1939. Their history begins in 1758 with the publication of Nowe Wiadomości Ekonomiczne i Uczone [Latest Economic and Learned News]. Our corpus includes 128 periodicals representing a great diversity of formats and content.

Abstract

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań grafiki dwunastu polskich czasopism popularnonaukowych ukazujących się XVIII wieku w Warszawie i Krakowie. Omówiono charakterystyczne cechy układu graficznego oraz szaty graficznej periodyków, wskazano prototypy europejskie tego typu czasopism oraz źródła pozyskiwania tekstów i ozdobnych elementów typograficznych, a także znaczenie grafiki dla popularyzacji nauki w czasopismach.

Abstract

This article examines two forms of 19th-century animal magnetism. The fi rst had its roots in early 19th-century Romanticism, the other fl ourished on the fringe of orthodox science and medicine in the last decades of the century. Common to both is a confl ation of scientifi c experimentation, hermetic thought and popular culture. Mesmerism represented a peculiar, excitingly unorthodox face of 19th-century modernity. Now largely discredited and forgotten, it fed on the contemporary enthusiasm for scientifi c discoveries and confi dence in the human ability to do virtually anything. What distinguished mesmerism from other vitalist theories was its claim to shift the boundary between physics and metaphysics.

Abstract

This article deals with Fryderyk Chopin's juvenilia and the occasional verse dedicated to him by his his relatives and friends. Extraordinarily diverse in tone and nature (versified happy birthday and nameday messages, friendship book entries, humorous and partying verse), they offer unexpected insights into various aspects of the composer's biography and his participation in the literary culture of his epoch, especially the more private occasions and celebrations.

Abstract

This article examines the history of periodicals which have been published in Sandomierz, or had an ongoing interest in the town, since 1816, when the first publication of this kind went into print. Apart from the Polish segment, the article covers periodicals in Latin, German, English, Russian and Dutch. So far c. 230 items on wide range of themes have been sourced to Sandomierz.

Abstract

The paper is concerned with the problem of proper name-functions in Polish reportages of the 20th century. The analysis is focused on diachronic changes. For the research, two periods of Polish history were chosen: soc-realism and post-socialism epochs. The observation of onomastic material proved that culture had a significant impact on proper name functions in reportage understood as a dynamic and polyphonic speech genre. Furthermore, the proper name as a specific language sign is undoubtedly an important element which informs of the cultural and social factors, customs and traditions of a particular period. The results of this study confirm the benefits of contextualizing onomastic research within a broadly understood cultural background.

Identifying the needs and expectations of the employee is an important element of her/his adaptation in the work environment. Because the age of life is one of the factors affecting the perception of the world and work, in this article motives of continuing professional activity in group of special educators are described in the age of life context.

Abstract

Apologia filosofico-storica in cui si mostra il sesso delle donne superiore a quello degli uomini, published in 1737 by the Palermitan nobleman Vincenzo Di Blasi, is a collection of examples – taken from myth, history and literature – of feminine values and virtues, composed in support of the superiority of the “womanish sex” over the virile one. The work is closely linked to the Sicilian cultural context of that time, suspended between a fossilized scholastic philosophy and a slow reception of the secular and modern Cartesian thought. But it confirms – also in Sicily – the growing cultural and disseminating function acquired by the so called “art of conversation”, alongside the already institutionalized model proposed by the academies.

Abstract

Joris-Karl Huysmans, one of the most prominent French writers of the turn of the twentieth century, began his literary career as a naturalist, a promising disciple of Emile Zola. He departed from these ideals in his best-known novel A rebours (1884), considered the “bible of decadence”. Its protagonist, the eccentric misanthrope des Esseintes, withdraws from society to indulge in contemplation in solitude, studying rare prints and seeking beauty in the singular. He appreciates the scandalising works of writers such as Barbey d,Aurevilly and Baudelaire. These authors have been accused of promoting satanism. Durtal, the protagonist of the novel Lă-bas, goes even further, in which we find contemporary echoes of satanism, attempts to revive the ritual of the black mass or a fascination with cruelty. Ultimately, however – and this is best evidenced in subsequent works ( En route, La Cathédrale, L,Oblat) satanism brings disillusionment. A return to the Christian religion, which Huysmans nevertheless interprets in an original way, becomes inevitable.

Abstract

Three Roman Catholic churches, built in Wrocław over the past several decades, were subjected to an analysis in the article. The author presented an aesthetic analysis of geometric forms which represent the different stylistic motifs that had been present during the period in our country. Postmodernism—rich in geometric ornamentation and called “romantic geometry”—from the beginning of the 1980’s was clashed with the calm, geometric new modernism from a slightly later period. In each case it was the context and the tradition of the historically rich city that became the superior value.

However, we can also find in their lives episodes that did them little credit, or even were downright disgraceful.

Abstract

Artykuł dotyczy korespondencji z Anglii pisanych przez Edmunda Naganowskiego w latach 1879–1903 i publikowanych w prasie w Warszawie, Krakowie i Lwowie. Teksty te dotyczyły kwestii z życia literac-kiego i kulturalnego, a także polityki i obyczajów angielskich. Naganowski pisał o najważniejszych pisa-rzach brytyjskich drugiej połowy XIX wieku. Wielka Brytania fascynowała pisarza, ale umiał też pisać o niej krytycznie.

Abstract

This paper discusses selected types of native, appellative-form surnames of the inhabitants of 19th-century Cieszyn Silesia and its surrounding areas. Such appellative-form surnames (without derivative indicators) reflect the regional culture and values characteristic to, and cultivated by, the inhabitants of the region. An overview of them confirms that Cieszyn Silesia, as an ethnic-cultural borderland, stands out with its sub-regional distinctness in onymic stock. The described surnames not only reflect the values acknowledged by the inhabitants of 19th-century Cieszyn Silesia, showing the immanence of this set in the regional context, but they also depict the material and spiritual culture of the inhabitants of this region. The researcher used the semantic field method to analyse the anthroponymic material, and the sociolinguistic aspect of naming was considered when describing the collected set of appellative-based surnames, with references made to statistical research.

Abstract

Polski film fabularny w latach 60. XX wieku był nie tylko medium przynoszącym rozrywkę czy też naukę, przyczynił się także do kształtowania gustów Polaków w zakresie architektury wnętrz. Architektura wnętrz w omawianym okresie stała się ponownie polem do szeroko zakrojonych eksperymentów twórczych noszących znamiona nowoczesności. Obraz filmowy tego czasu w wielu przypadkach stał się zapisem historii polskiego wnętrzarstwa. Z perspektywy czasu, który minął możemy traktować kadry filmu jako obraz historyczny, dzięki któremu istnieje możliwość zobaczenia dzieł w ich naturalnym środowisku.

Abstract

W artykule stawiamy pytanie o postawy społeczne, na których zbudowane może być obecnie społeczeństwo wielokulturowe w Polsce, a także jakiego typu będzie to wielokulturowość. W wyniku nasilających się we współczesnym świecie procesów globalizacyjnych przybywa obecnie do naszego kraju wielu imigrantów, odmiennych kulturowo i często rasowo. Poprzez swój pobyt przyczyniają się oni do budowy kulturowej różnorodności, współczesnej wielokulturowości, rozumianej zarówno w kategoriach obiektywnych jako kulturowa różnorodność, jak i w kategoriach aksjologicznych (świadomościowych) jako akceptacja tejże różnorodności, wymagająca umiejętności funkcjonowania w jej ramach. W artykule zajmujemy się analizą postaw Polaków wobec imigrantów należących do grup kulturowo odmiennych od autochtonicznej większości. Jego celem jest porównanie poglądów dotyczących otwartości na obcość u osób o tym samym poziomie wykształcenia, ale różniących się wiekowo co najmniej jednym pełnym pokoleniem.

Abstract

This biographical sketch is based on materials from the Roman Ingarden Archive, as yet unrecognized in philosophical literature. These materials are preserved in Krakow by Krzysztof Ingarden, the grandson of the philosopher. On their basis, a two‑volume biography was prepared by R. Kuliniak and M. Pandura I am a philosopher of the world (Κόσμου φιλόσοφός εἰμι) – Roman Witold Ingarden (1893–1970), Parts I and II, Wydawnictwo Marek Derewiecki, Kęty 2019–2020). This presentation is an abridged version of those volumes.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effects of age across adult groups on selected aspects of language learning. To achieve the aim, a study was conducted at the Open University of University of Warsaw. It focuses on reasons for taking up learning, relative importance of individual skills, major difficulties, individual goals, emotions and self-assessed ability to learn. The assumption that adults represent a single age group is questioned and the results are interpreted in terms of practical implications for course design.

Abstract

The article discusses the architecture of the parish church in Czarnca (1640 – around 1655), which up till now has not been discussed in detail by researchers. The innovative construction solutions used in the church are part of a wider European environment, in which architects were looking for ways to make better use of natural sunlight for interior lightning in buildings.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the presentation of the achivements of historians working in Kraków, which are devoted to the history of England, Scotland, and Ireland in the early modern period. In the inter‑war period (1918‑1939) the works of Władysław Konopczyński and Stanisław Kot are mentioned. The former authored several articles devoted to the English Parliament and English reactions to the partitions of Poland. The latter studied traces of the Polish Brethren in Britain and the consequences of their influence.
After World War II it was Stanisław Grzybowski who should be named as the first historian who undertook serious research on British topics. He published a number of popular books, several of which were widely circulated and read, and one original source study on Tudor and early Stuart colonial policy.
It is Grzybowski's student, Mariusz Misztal who has published the most widely on the early modern history of England, especially on Mary Stuart, James Stuart to move to 19th century topics connected with Queen Victoria. Andrzej Kuropatnicki is ‑ in turn ‑ Misztal's student. He works and publishes on early modern English cookery and medicine.

Abstract

The author analyses the history of scientific and public discourses growing around the phenom-enon of Głuchoniemcy (Deaf‑Germans) in Poland. In the literature, this term refers to the des-cendants of the German‑speaking colonists who settled in the Polish‑Ruthenian border in the mid‑fourteenth century. The history of interest in this phenomenon from the eighteenth to the twentieth century reflects the cultural changes and social tensions over time. These descendants of the German‑speaking colonists living in the Carpathian Foothills were mentioned for the first time in the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century as a regional phenomenon of cultural diversity. In the era of Romanticism, when the importance of national identity in Europe grew, so‑called Deaf Germans were portrayed as fully assimilated Polish settlers with only relics refer-ring to German culture. At the end of the nineteenth century, after the publication of Józef Szujski, they became the subject of a political debate and were placed in the context of peasant history. Finally, the socio‑political situation of the interwar period led to the term “Głuchoniemcy” being removed from scientific and public discourses for many decades. After World War II, the absence of the topic became permanent, still directly related to the Polish‑German antagonism that set the directions of scientific interests of ethnographers and historians in Poland. The article tries to answer the question about the course of these changes in the perception of Deaf Germans by looking for external causes as well as those resulting from the nature of the subject of interest.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the understanding of social history of Jerzy Topolski, from the theoretical side and as it was used in practical research work. The source basis, aside from the few direct quotes from the historian from Poznan on social history, are mainly analyses of his selected original works and works edited by him. The article also takes note of the discussion surrounding the term ‘social history’ itself and the research scope of social history as a historic discipline or sub-discipline which took place in the second half of the 20th century, which is the period in which Topolski published his works.

Abstract

In 2020 the Kórnik Library’s collections were supplemented with new documents connected with the beginnings of the Protestant parish in Bnin. The present article presents the time of formation and the first years of functioning of evangelical community in Bnin, which was one of the biggest communities in Greater Poland (excluding Poznań) for more over 150 years. After a brief introduction, the following part describes upon mentioned sources the establishing of community and construction of the first Lutheran church in Bnin with its buildings. Finally, the annex contains biographies of the first five pastors in Bnin and source edition of these documents.
